The NFL and their officials finally settled their dispute and the regular referees were back on the field last weekend after a game on “Monday Night Football” between Green Bay and Seattle that had to be seen to be believed. One of the most recognizable personalities in sports chimed in on his lockout thoughts, although he had his own reasons for trashing the NFL.
It is well known that former NBA star and Hall of Famer Charles Barkley likes to bet, and he’ll tell you about it all day long. In a radio interview that he did shortly after the wild ending to the Packers-Seahawks game on that fateful Monday, Barkley claimed that he lost thousands of dollars on the game thanks to a number of borderline ridiculous calls that handed Seattle a victory. He proceeded to state that the NFL didn’t care about the fans and were all about the money, which is something that we knew already.
However, “Sir Charles” isn’t the only one who was bitten by the replacement referees as reports surfaced that millions of dollars changed hands because of that game, and not just millions: depending on which report you believe, between $150 and $300 million swung because of the outcome of that game. This even caused some to speculate whether the refs were being “persuaded” to make certain calls and after what happened in the NBA concerning Tim Donaghy, it wasn’t as ridiculous as it may have sounded about a decade ago.
But that is the wicked and wild world of gambling, although some casinos actually gave back refunds on the Seahawks-Packers game, which is something you don’t see every day. Even though the real refs made a few bad calls this weekend, the game is surely in a better place with them back and that will also help bettors make better decisions.
